Sunglasses and Facial Features

Which Sunglasses Are Best For Your Face Shape

Advice On Choosing Sunglasses To Compliment Your Facial Features
When choosing sunglasses the choice comes down to a lot more than price and designer. While an expensive pair of Prada Sunglasses might look stunning on your best friend, they may look just as unflattering on you. When choosing sunglasses it all comes down to picking out the style of frame, colour and size which flatters the best points of your face whilst minimising and drawing attention away from those areas which are not so desirable.

There are several main forms of facial type out there and the first step is for you to decide which yours falls under. There is a simple way to do this. Go look in a mirror or grab a photo of yourself and using the forehead, cheekbones and jaw trace reference points and compare them to the facial types below:

Oval Face - Pretty much anything goes with an oval facial shape. Choose the latest styles and frames, experiment all you like and it'll probably look great.

Round Face - Avoid round frames and go for straight or angular lines instead. Deeper colours such as black frames also help tone down the roundness. Double brow frames may also help to minimise curves.

Square Face - Characterised by a broad forehead, wide cheekbones and strong jawline. Choose ovals and round frames to help minimise the squareness. Cat eye frames and any frame which has slight curves to it help play down the squareness.

Rectangular Face - Rectanglular or oblong facial features are similar to the square face but longer in length than width. Most frames look ok with this facial shape however, choosing frames which are narrower than the widest part of the face, help shorten and widen the face to a more balanced look.

Triangular Face - Characterised by a wide forehead tapering to a narrow jawline. Choose sunglasses which draw attention to the eyes and upper facial area. Frames without bottoms may help to acheive this.

Diamond Shape Face - Any face shape where the cheekbones are wider than the forehead and chin is a diamond shape. For this facial shape you should ensure the sunglasses you choose do not extend out beyond the cheekbones. Rounded oblong and rectangular frames usually suit this facial shape.

The Nose Knows You Know...
Have you considered your nose lately? Probably not, but everyone else will if you choose the wrong kind of sunglasses!

Long nose, big nose, small nose...which do you have? Whichever it is, choosing the right type of frames when you buy sunglasses can again, accentuate the good whilst drawing attention away from the bad.

Big Nose - If you are blessed with a larger than average snozzle then the last thing you need to be doing is picking out a tiny pair of sunglasses to make it look twice as big again. Choose outsize frames to compliment your nose, not those tiny John Lennon glasses or it'll just look like two peas perched on a cucumber...

Long Nose - Try to draw attention away from the nose and upwards towards the forehead region if you have a long nose. Pick frames which have a double bridge or high sidebars, anything to draw attention up and away.

Short Nose - If you have a nose which is proportionately small in regards to the rest of your face then a high bridge can make it appear longer.

Skin Tone and Colouration
Are your warm or cool? These are the terms used to describe which of the two categories your skin tone and overall facial colouration falls into. Hair, eyes and skin are all determining factors as to whether you are a warm, cool or neutral colour group.

Olive Complexions - generally cool
Yellow or Peaches and Cream - generally warm
Blue or pinkish undertones - cool

There are more detailed colour tests which can be found easily online and we suggestion you take a look at one of those for a more detailed analysis of your colouration.

Once you have decided whether you are warm, cool or neutral then you can choose a frame colour to either accentuate this, or take away from it if you are less pleased with your colouration.

Remember, cool colours have a pink or blue undertone, warm have a yellow or peaches and cream undertone so choose colours to match. For example, gold, camel, reds, off-white goes with a warm colouration, whilst blacks, browns, plum colours match well with cool colouration. You can experiment with colours in your wardrobe to see what goes well with your colour if you are unsure.
