A decent pair of sunglasses represents a reasonably sized investment with designer sunglasses ranging in price up to and above the £200 mark. Considering that, then it's somewhat surprising how badly most people treat their sunglasses. If they're not being left in a bar, sat on, dropped, put on the family pet or otherwise abused, they're eventually thrown in a car glove compartment or suitcase where they get scratched up and crushed...and then you're buying a new pair to do it all over again.
With a little bit of care, a good pair of sunglasses should last many years rather than one summer, or one holiday trip. The following advice offers some simple tips to help tips to help this happen:
Get A Good Hard Sunglasses Case - And USE IT!
The soft cases which come with many types of sunglasses are good at preventing scratches and keeping dust and smears off the lenses but that's as far as the protection goes. A good hard case will offer protection against your sunglasses being sat on, dropped etc. leaving you free to toss them in a pocket or glove compartment without having to worry.
Avoid Bending The Frames
Damaging and distorting the frames of your sunglasses is easily done. Avoid twirling the around by one arm, placing them on top of your head when not in use and for plastic frames, avoid leaving them in direct sunlight such as on the dashboard of your car as this can melt and deform the frame.
Investing in a mini-screwdriver kit can help your frames last longer. Tighten the screws when they become loose because once you lose one they're a nightmare to find.
Get A Sunglasses Chain
If you find you are in a position where you have to keep removing your sunglasses, like say, a delivery driver who uses them for driving, then get a chain to wear around your neck. This stops you being tempted to dump them on the ashboard, throw them in a pocket or otherwise put your lenses at risk of being scratched.
A chain also helps prevent you losing your glasses, especially good if you are someone who regularly loses sunglasses on holiday or when out at a bar etc.
Take Care When Cleaning Your Sunglasses
Find a decent cleaning cloth and stick to it. Rubbing your lenses with harsher, more abrasive materials like wool and denim will scratch the lenses very quickly. Find a soft, non-oily, lint-free cloth and lightly buff the lenses.
For removing fingerprints, specks and smudges, avoid scracthing away with your fingernail, pocket change...keys(!) etc. and instead use a specialised lens cleaning wipe.
Break Those Bad Habits
Just use some common sense and it goes a long way. Pockets are for loose change, keys and general junk, not for unprotected sunglasses. Purses are the same. Laying your sunglasses down on a table for a minute is fine so long as the lenses are FACE UP and if you leave them there longer then expect someone to knock them off, spill on them or otherwise dump something on top of them which will scratch the lenses.
Treat your sunglasses well and they'll last as long as you want them too.
